Who runs Solar & Window Clean?
Cobus Bester owns and runs Solar & Window Clean from Fish Hoek, Cape Town. He has 30 years in the home maintenance business. He quotes each job himself, from the photos or short video you send on WhatsApp.
Solar & Window Clean itself is a new business. You can read what Solar & Window Clean does on the home page.
More about Cobus is coming soon.
How does Cobus work?
Cobus works by two principles. In his own words:
- Serving customers "better than they expected".
- Using the "best and correct tools for a specific job", which means "best results, always".
For you, that starts with honest advice. Canadian Solar says panels tilted at 15° or more "generally may not require cleaning", because rain does the job [4]. If your panels are steep and get a good rinse every winter, they may not need a clean yet. Send Cobus a photo or short video on WhatsApp and ask.
Why does Cobus clean with purified water and soft brushes?
Cobus cleans with purified water and soft brushes because, in his view, they're the right tools for glass. He uses equipment from a specialist South African supplier. It purifies the water by reverse osmosis and feeds it through water-fed poles.
Purified water has almost no dissolved minerals, so it dries without mineral spots and needs no soap or detergent, says cleaning-equipment maker Unger [1]. Most glass is cleaned from the ground with water-fed poles.
See how this works for solar panels, solar geysers and windows and glass.
How does Cobus avoid damaging panels and glass?
Cobus follows the solar panel makers' rules on walking, heat and cracked glass, and treats solar geyser collectors the same way.
- We never walk, stand or kneel on solar panels or solar geyser collectors. JA Solar, Jinko, LONGi and Trina all forbid standing on their panels [2, 3, 5, 6].
- We clean panels and collectors only when they are cool. Jinko warns that cool water on hot glass may break it [3].
- Trina and Canadian Solar say panels with cracked glass must not be wet-cleaned [4, 6]. If we see cracked glass, we leave it alone and tell you.
